Hillsborough Disaster 1989

As Affiliate Members of the Football Supporters Association and in the build up to our match against Liverpool on Saturday the Trust, in unity with the ‘Spirit of Shankly’ supporter group would reiterate our support for the fight for justice that has been ongoing since 1989.

This week has seen, belatedly, a full apology from the Police in relation to the events at Hillsborough:

Andy Marsh, the chief executive of the College of Policing said ‘‘Policing has profoundly failed those bereaved by the Hillsborough disaster over many years and we are sorry that the service got it so wrong. Police failures were the main cause of the tragedy and have continued to blight the lives of family members ever since. When leadership was most needed, the bereaved were often treated insensitively and the response lacked coordination and oversight.”

For those that remember the events surrounding the Hillsborough tragedy followed by the subsequent smear campaign perpetuated by the police, media, and government will also know that this could have been any group of supporters, corralled behind fences at stadiums across the country.

It was a defining moment that affected every football supporter, a Trust member described his experience in our WhatsApp Group, we think it is important to share this message with the wider fan base:

The Trust also acknowledges victims of all football related disasters across the UK, and World. No family should suffer the loss of a loved one, simply because they attended a football match.
