Brodie’s gravestone
Members of the Trust, including Kevin Harris of Wolves History Walks, the driving force behind researching this era of the club’s history (as well as fund-raising for the club founders’ gravestones), attended the celebration of the stone fitting for Wolves co-founder, John Brant Brodie. This took place at Merridale Cemetery on the 18th November 2025, and afterwards there was a meet-up at the Mermaid pub, Wightwick. John was born at the blacksmith’s shop previously located next to the Mermaid. The day was finished off with a visit to Wolves museum.
There were 17 people in attendance for all or part of the day, including descendants of the Brodie, Brant and Baynton families.
Trust Chair, Keith Bickley and Secretary, Anne Bott (Anne helped with the research), were in attendance, alongside Kevin.
John’s family members and others made a big effort to attend, travelling from all over England.
It’s been 100 years since John Brodie, Wolves co-founder, along with John Baynton (whose gravestone was laid earlier this year in Alfreton, Derbyshire), passed away. This would, probably, have been the first occasion for members of the Brodie, Brant and Baynton families to all gather together since 1925.
The relevance of this project is important as we approach Wolves 150th anniversary next season 2026/27.
Kevin’s history walks will recommence in the Spring of 2026, we will publicise the dates when they become available.
